Snapper (the gal pictured on the cot) and Ralph (looking sophisticated with his crossed paws) have resided with us for approximately 3 years. Both came to us from different families; however, both were owner surrendered to our county shelter and were destined for euthanasia due to their advanced age at that time. Now both dogs are struggling more and more with age related joint problems. Despite pain medications, joint supplements, anti-inflammatories and physical assistance with getting up and around … we feel that their quality of life is becoming questionable. We’ll continue to provide for them in any way that we can and we’ll monitor them both very closely … as we feel it may soon be time to say good-bye. Please keep these elderly dogs in your thoughts and wish them a happy and comfortable final few days, weeks, months …

Tiffany writes, “My mom had Emma for 14.5 years. She lost her to seizures that were just making life for sweet Emma frightening and disorienting (on top of growing blindness & suspected hearing loss). Emma was a sweet, loving companion to my mom and she loved all people, dogs and even cats. Emma was a bit of a runt but smart, obedient and always eager to please. She loved to go for car rides, especially to go visit the grandkids & their golden doodle puppy. She is missed.” Rest in peace sweet Emma. You will live on in the kind gift that was made in your name. Our sympathies are extended to your grieving mom.

Sam can be a challenge to care for as he is very animal aggressive and even has a tendency to be unpredictably aggressive towards people! As a result, we have to be extremely cautious (and we are!) about his exposure to other critters (as we have lots here at the farm!). Further, he has a single human care-taker and no one else is allowed to handle him. We do our very best to provide Sam with a few sessions of supervised, individual play time each day and his accommodations are simple … but comfortable. Due to Sam’s limited exposure to other animals and humans, we try to provide him with fun things to “do” when he’s kenneled. As you can imagine, however, his strong jaws are no match for most chews, toys and we even have to replace his dog house regularly (as he chews and chews until there’s nothing left). Well, it’s that time again and we’re in need of some “tough-dog” chew toys, mega-sized bones/rawhides and whatever else might help to keep his guy mentally stimulated. We consider this all part of his enrichment and even though we all have to abide by certain rules in order to keep everyone safe … that doesn’t mean that Mr. Sam isn’t entitled to a little fun. Please consider donating a chew or toy to Sam. We’ll make sure that he doesn’t go without – so don’t worry. But we do prefer to use our limited funds on necessary medications and food for our dozens of elderly and special needs resident animals. “Enrichment items” are more fun to buy anyway! So if you’re able to make a donation to Sam please feel free to drop off any items at Suburban Animal Hospital and just specify that your item is intended for Sam Thanks in advance for your generosity!

This little one came to us last week after being picked up as a stray. Who knows what this gal’s story is or where she originally came from?? But one thing was certain – she needed help. Daisy appears to be quite elderly (at least 11 years old) and she came to us with significant medical concerns. In addition to some “normal” geriatric health concerns such as being arthritic, blind, deaf and having dental disease … her ears were so badly infected that pus literally filled her ear canals and was caked to all the hair around her ears and face. She smelled horrible … not to mention the pain and discomfort associated with such bad infections. She also had a ruptured left eye. This appears to have happened some time ago as her body had sealed off the hole in her cornea as best it could and she now doesn’t seem to have much (if any) feeling left in the eye. The eye, despite it’s ugly appearance, doesn’t seem to bother her although we will monitor her closely and will remove the eye if necessary. The first line of duty was to clip away all of the pus-laden hair from around her ears, clean her sore infected ears, give her a whole body shave and a medicated bath (or two, or three!). While she’s still a work in progress, Daisy almost looks (and feels) like a normal dog again! She has a quiet, appreciative and easy-going disposition. She doesn’t ask for much … just a clean, soft place to nap and some tasty food. Daisy has adjusted well to her life here at the farm and has become friends with another elderly, medically challenged chihuahua named Possum. We expect her to continue to improve health-wise … although we’ve already managed to get her ears healthy again and she seems to feel great! We’re happy to have been in a position to help this little girl … who clearly needed our help! It’s so good to see her thriving and the “before” and “after” pictures speak for themselves!

For the last 8 years, Steve Ryan has been a great neighbor and personal friend to us, the farm and to all of our resident animals. Steve was a huge supporter of our mission, a genuine animal and nature lover and was always quick to offer words of encouragement and support when times got tough. Every morning, before the sun came up, Steve would holler out his truck window, “morning neighbor” on his way down to get the paper. We’d be out feeding and would reply with a quick flashlight wave and a simple, “morning Steve”. Steve had a saying to sum up our lifestyle and our desire to assist animals in need … “we’re all critters … so we all have to look out for each other” he would say. He was right. Despite our feelings of loss … we have no doubt that you were greeted by many wagging tails and wet kisses as you passed from this life to whatever comes next. Your many beloved critters who have passed on before you were surely so glad to be reunited once again. We hope that you rest in peace Steve and that wherever you are, you’re sitting on a quiet porch, overlooking a fish filled pond and watching deer and wild turkeys wander by … with a few good dogs always by your side. We’ll miss you Steve and we thank you for your friendship throughout the years.

Whether you’re at our rehabilitation & retirement farm, our rescue & rehoming property, or at our adoption events … the work that we do is truly an all encompassing lifestyle choice. This means that here at the farm, everyone pitches in on a day-to-day basis to keep the place up and running. No one, regardless of age, seems to be exempt. And luckily, our little one doesn’t seem to mind one bit! She may be small … but she’s mighty and whether it’s helping during meal time or interacting with some of our elderly dogs, she doesn’t hesitate to get her hands dirty! Just goes to show that everyone can lend a hand and make a difference – regardless of size and stature!

This week, Leashed explores dog doppelgangers. In German, doppelganger translates as “double walker”; just recently, we met Cooper’s video double.

Tallahassee’s Guyte McCord Park is naturally scented in an ecologically minded neighborhood. Cooper’s attention to scent often attracts humans and canines. Frequent conversations are common for both species and to the point.

“I own his twin. His name is Grant,” a woman says to us. Although her Grant is “pure” beagle, the woman is impressed with Cooper, mix that he is.

Sensing he is center stage, Cooper offers up a harping “honk,” followed with a softer version of reverse sneezing. It rarely fails to elicit a sympathetic response but there’s always a first time.

“Yup, just like Grant. Look!” She pulls out her cell phone, as if it is a practiced move, and instantly accesses a minutes-long video of Grant chasing a toy ball filled with kibble, honking and sneezing. The resemblance to Cooper is uncanny, right down to the white ring on Grant’s tail.

“Grant aspires to be a goat.” Her sigh is audible. If it’s chewable–or even when it’s not—Grant’s system manages to work it out, one end or the other. Now, the resemblance is complete.

Snoop is Cooper’s original name, changed in the faint hope that he would forego his foraging ways. Cooper stashes chews or toys—for some future somewhere—for all the rest, he relies on Pepcid.

She just recently came to us after being found as a stray by a Good Samaritan. Weeks of trying to locate her owner were unsuccessful and so she is getting a second chance as a permanent resident at the farm. Possum appears to be very, very old … probably in her mid-teens. She is missing the entire lower aspect of her jaw (very much like another one of our resident dogs, Barry Mandible!). Possum is also essentially hairless and her skin is scarred and thickened like elephant skin … due to years of fleas and untreated bacterial and yeast skin infections. She was quite emaciated when initially found and has since packed on some pounds (well, let’s be honest, given that she only weighs a whopping 4 lbs … let’s just say she’s filling out nicely). Despite her “possum appearance”, this less than aesthetically pleasing little girl is as sweet as can be. She doesn’t ask for much at all; other than a soft place to sleep the days away. She’s being treated for her terribly thickened and itchy skin and we’re optimistic that she will once again regrow her hair over the next few months. We’re happy to be able to give this little girl a second chance and a safe and comfortable retirement. And just for the record, we have nothing at all against possums – as we actually had a pair of possums reside with us for a period of time too! Happy retirement Possum and welcome to Second Chance Farm!

We started out 2012 a bit foggy … not because we had enjoyed too much “bubbly” the night before … but because the entire farm was literally blanketed in a very dense fog on Jan 1st, 2012. The pasture took on a bit of an eery appearance as the chickens (seen here), goats, horse and donkey could barely be made out … as they grazed and foraged. Once the sun came up, everything cleared and we started the new year much like any other day here at the farm. Happy 2012 to all of our friends, family, volunteers, foster families and supporters. We are excited about all of the potentials (and challenges!) that are ahead of us this year!

She was ~10 years old and overall, she had a good, long life. Momma, as she came to be called, was not a “typical hen”. She wanted more than anything to be with people; instead of with other chickens. So we did our best to spend extra time with her and to give her special attention. She did, infact, even live indoors during various times throughout her life. Momma didn’t have a carefree life – although we did our very best to protect her. She suffered from a badly fractured leg when she was only a few years old after a rooster attacked her. And she was the victim of 2 very severe predator attacks which left her with life threatening wounds all over her body. But this little girl was tough as nails and let us help her in ways that no other chicken would likely have tolerated. Due to her incredible personality and willingness to accept help – we became very fond of this old gal. Last year, we were thrilled when she surprised us with a single yellow chick. She had never expressed any interest in sitting on eggs and usually kept to herself when the other chickens went out to graze. But Momma became a whole new hen once she had her little chick. She took such pride in showing her baby all the ropes around the farm and for the first time in her life, she was excited to join the other chickens out in the pasture. We were all devastated when he her little baby became too big for her britches and crept through the pasture fence into the dog’s yard. There was nothing that we could do and we didn’t get there in time. Worst of all, Momma saw the whole thing and was never quite the same in regards to personality. We tried to re-introduce another yellow chick for her to raise, but she wanted nothing to do with her new friend. We tried to introduce her to a young, little hen … but again, she acted out aggressively and just wanted to be by herself. She became withdrawn and stopped enjoying interacting even with us. The other chickens started picking on her relentlessly and she overall seemed very depressed. We set her up in her own enclosure so that she would be safe from the other hens and so that we could cater to her more individually. We made a point twice a day to stop in and pet her and say hello … but she wasn’t herself. She stopped laying eggs all together, started losing weight, and we knew that she wasn’t well. When she didn’t roost on her perch one night, we knew that she was dying. She was weak, sad and we didn’t want her to pass away alone. She came indoors one last time and while she sat on my lap, we helped her to pass quickly and peacefully. She was such a sweet gal and we really do miss her presence here at the farm. We are comforted, however, in knowing that she has most certainly been re-united with her little chick and that she is happy once again being Momma Hen. Rest in peace sweet girl -you were a very good chicken.

Thank you for helping us to give second chances all year round.

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there

The children were nestled all snug in their beds
With no thought of the dog filling their head

And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap
Knew he was cold, but didn’t care about that

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter

Away to the window I flew like a flash
Figuring the dog was free of his chain and into the trash

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear
But Santa Claus – with eyes full of tears

He un-chained the dog, once so lively and quick
Last year’s Christmas present, now painfully thin and sick

More rapid than eagles he called the dog’s name
And the dog ran to him, despite all his pain

“Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN!

To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!
Let’s find this dog a home where he’ll be loved by all.”

I knew in an instant there would be no gifts this year
For Santa Claus had made one thing quite clear

The gift of a dog is not just for the season
We had gotten the pup for all the wrong reasons

In our haste to think of the kids a gift
There was one important thing that we missed

A dog should be family, and cared for the same
You don’t give a gift, then put it on a chain

And I heard him exclaim as he rode out of sight
“You weren’t given a gift! You were given a LIFE!”

A donation was made in memory of little Bear … who’s dad had to say goodbye suddenly and unexpectedly after Bear developed signs of advanced kidney failure. Bear and his dad were best friends and although they were only together for 3 short years … Bear’s dad truly gave him a second chance by taking him in and giving Bear a loving, safe home. Bear had suffered from a badly fractured pelvis as a result of physical abuse and so he never truly had normal function of his back legs. Bear’s dad took him in and cared for him despite his handicap. The two were inseparable. We are truly sorry that these two friends had to part ways but we know that Bear and his dad will see each other again someday. In a coincidental twist of fates, Bear actually now rests permanently at Second Chance Farms. His dad wanted to know that his little friend would rest comfortably somewhere safe … and so we “brought him home to the farm”. Thanks for giving Bear a second chance 3 years ago and for trusting us to give Bear a comfortable final resting place. We are so truly sorry for your loss.

Well, this year, Christmas has come a few days early to farm. After an already frustrating start to the week, why not top it off with having to replace the farm’s well?!?! Aggghhh!!! Yep, the farm woke up to no water this AM, and rather than it being a simple “fix”, it was anything but. After tearing down new fencing that had just been installed to make room for the rather impressive truck … the work was well on it’s way. The dogs were on relatively good behavior during the whole ordeal. And the guys working were super respectful and patient with the numerous dogs swarming to “help”. They even helped to control the chaos when a couple of fence fights broke out! Looks like this year the farm and all of it’s residents will be getting the simple necessity of water for Christmas. Hopefully this is the end of this week’s frustrations and set backs and come Saturday, we’ll be able to kick of Christmas Eve with everything back in order. Thanks to the guys from Myer’s for their hard work and speedy response time!

As a grey-blue dilute cat of a certain age, EmmaRose weighs 5.5 pounds, and she knows her mind. Daily, she grooms Cooper James, whether he thinks he needs it or not. Most of the time he thinks not but Emma grooms him anyway. They’re growing old together, and she watches out for him.

EmmaRose does not care for travel by car but she thrills to midair flights in pursuit of stuffed blue mice or skillful stalks of the outside world behind a picture window. She prefers her possibilities endless.

During this holiday season, she discovered pine cones; every morning offers a new cone arrangement. Tented holiday cards provide a paw hide-and-seek scenario for the wee morning hours, although EmmaRose has never lacked for midnight hour amusement.

If EmmaRose has her way, the pine cones will stay for wonder, love, joy are always in season.

Winston came to us in an unfortunate way. This 16 year old little terrier mix wandered away from home on Thanksgiving Day. He was picked up by Animal Services and spent about a week at the county shelter before we found out about his situation. Winston was old, he had a malignant tumor on the left side of his chest and he missed his family. We agreed to take him into our program in hopes of giving him a comfortable retirement; as he was nearing the end of his stay at the county shelter. Sadly, once we had a chance to examine Winston, we found that he wasn’t in very good shape. He was painful from arthritis and from the large tumor on his side. Further examination revealed that the tumor had actually spread internally and Winston’s quality of life was questionable. We hated to give up on this little man … but we felt it was unfair to put him through too much and thought it kinder to help him pass peacefully and with dignity. This little man helped himself to a homemade meatball sub, some cheese and some scrumptious cookies (the office was having a luncheon). Once he’d had his fill … we gently helping him to cross over the rainbow bridge … knowing that he was safe and loved. We wished that Winston was with his family … but we felt as if we were the next best thing. As if this all wasn’t hard enough … Winston’s owners did infact go looking for him the very next day at the county shelter! We we so saddened when we heard the news as we would have so preferred that Winston could have seem his family once more before passing on. Winston’s family, while devastated by the news of his passing, was so incredibly appreciative of our involvement. They felt comfort in the fact that although Winston wasn’t with them … he was surrounded by people who cared and who had his best interest in mind. They miss him dearly, but they also know that his time was coming to an end and that they would soon be having to say goodbye. We most certainly wish that the circumstances of Wintson’s passing had been different. But we’re thankful that we were there for him when he needed us. And we thank his kind owners for their support and appreciation of our efforts to help. Rest in peace little man and our sympathies to his grieving family.

Mowgli came to the right place and the right time … and as a result, he’s now living the good life! This little man was picked up as an injured stray a few weeks ago. Due to his injuries, animal control took him to a local animal hospital to initiate treatment. Mowgli was literally missing his entire right rear foot! He had presumably suffered from a terrible injury weeks before being found and his foot was simply gone. Other than some exposed bones and red, fleshy tissue … there was nothing left. Despite his ordeal, Mowgli was a complete gentleman and allowed us to examine him without sedation! We bandaged his injured stump and started pain medications and antibiotics. We also scheduled him for surgery a few days later. Mowgli quickly won over the heart of a technician at the vet hospital where he was being treated and he has since found himself living a rather luxurious life … where he never again will have to worry about injuries, hunger or abandonment. Mowgli’s leg continues to improve on an almost daily basis. We are hoping to avoid amputation and have been treating his wounded leg with frequent bandage changes. Mowgli is proving to be an amazing healer and a very healthy layer of granulation tissue (basically scar tissue) has already grown over the exposed bones. New skin is growing inward and over the stump and we expect him to make a complete recovery over the next few months. Mowgli will most likely need to wear a protective boot during active play in order to prevent abrasions to the end of his “stump”. But he is 100% carefree now and we thank everyone involved in giving him a much deserved second chance. Mowgli is currently being called a “permanent foster” and SCF will continue to provide for him until he’s healed completely. And while we could be mistake … we don’t anticipate that his current foster family will be willing to let him go anywhere else once he’s healed Mowgli has found his second chance in more ways than one! This picture of his leg was taken shortly after Mowgli came to the vet hospital. We’ll be sure to document his progress and will post more pictures soon!

These two sweet dogs were picked up as strays last Thursday and they are quickly running out of time. They are currently safe at a local animal hospital, but they can’t stay there past this week. They are destined for the county shelter … where they will undoubtedly have a very rough time. The female (pictured here on the right) is beautiful and super sweet … but she’s older (~8 yrs) and has a growth on her rectum that needs to be removed. The male is younger (~3 yrs). He is extremely handsome and is also very gentle and kind … but he is not neutered and has some eye discharge that is being treated. These two will most likely be euthanized at the county shelter due to their ages and medical issues (although very treatable). They are extremely bonded to each other … always curled up together and snuggling in their run. If they go to the county shelter, they undoubtedly will have to be split up … best case scenario. We are desperate to find a permanent foster home or adoptive home for them this week and we want them to stay together. All veterinary expenses will be covered by SCF; including vaccines, heartworm testing, deworming, surgery to remove the female’s growth, and spay and neuter surgeries. Please consider giving these two the best Christmas gift ever … a second chance. It would truly mean the world to these two and they most certainly deserve it. If you are unable to provide a temporary or permanent home, please consider making a donation towards their medical care. Every little bit helps!

Her family adored her and they recently had to say goodbye to this sweet girl after she was diagnosed with an aggressive and painful bone tumor. Juno was originally found as a stray on the side of the road and was fortunate enough to have spent 14 wonderful years with her family. Rest in peace sweet girl. We extend our sympathies to your mourning mom and dad. They miss you so much.

While there is rarely a dull moment at the farm, we are still sometimes caught off guard by odd occurrences that we never could have anticipated. Last evening began like any other. We were out feeding the animals and while out in the pasture feeding the goats, horse and donkey … the peaceful routine suddenly became very chaotic and urgent! River, our elderly resident horse, was standing in his usual eating spot waiting for his hay and grain. He suddenly jumped back and started to panic as his head seemed to be stuck to a large support post of the pole barn. Luckily, I was literally right there getting ready to give him hay and went over to him immediately. I was expecting to find his halter stuck on his feed bucket but to my horror (and his!) River had somehow managed to pierce his nose with a very thick, metal hook (a hook intended for hanging his feed bucket from). This hook has been there for years and we never in a million years would have thought that this “maneuver” would be remotely possible. However, River had managed to literally pierce, full thickness through his nostril and the more he struggled to get away … the more his poor, soft nose tore!! It was awful!! Again, luckily we were right there and we were able to quickly get him calmed down and stopped his struggling. He stood like a champ while we maneuvered and wedged that huge hook out of his nose and let me tell you … it was no easy task to get him unhooked! He was bleeding, panicked and hurting … but he knew that we were helping him and so he stood perfectly still while we worked frantically. River, ultimately, will be ok … but his poor nose is badly torn and probably permanently deformed. Luckily, he has continued to be a trooper and is letting us tend to him. We certainly don’t care about his cosmetic appearance … but we sure do hope for a very quick and speedy recovery! Please send good wishes his way. We’ll spare you pictures as they are rather grotesque Needless to say, that hook was removed immediately and we’ve scoured the pasture and pole barn for any other potential hazards.

We care for lots of elderly, chronically ill and injured animals at the farm. Perhaps one of the most time consuming aspects of our daily routine involves medicating and treating all of these animals. Most of our resident dogs, for example, require twice daily oral medications. We also have numerous cats on daily oral medications, our resident goats and horse often require oral or injectable medication … and we’ve even medicated our resident chickens and ducks during times of illness or injury. Not only do we simply have to provide the medications, but we also have to devise clever ways to get our residents to consume their medications reliably. As most of you know, “pilling” doesn’t always go over so well … and many animals are experts at dissecting around tasty morsels only to spit out the much needed medication. As if that’s not enough, many of our animals are on 2 or 3 different medications twice a day!

So how do we keep track of all these different medications, dosing regimens, medicating techniques, etc? Well …. each week we pre-fill all of our pill sorters with everyone’s meds for that upcoming week. We actually mostly utilize recycled, styrofoam egg cartons, labeled with each animal’s name, noted with AM & PM, and day of the week. We have a tray for each day of the week, each animal has their own little “bin” within each tray and everything is labeled to avoid mistakes in medicating each individual. The trays are stacked … Monday through Friday … and stored in tupperware containers for the week. Then, at each feeding, the appropriate medications are found conveniently in each labeled tray and Pill Pockets assist greatly in making the medicating process go smoothly.

Our most commonly used medications include: antibiotics, carprofen (an anti-inflammatory for arthritis), tramadol (a pain medication for advanced arthritis), thyroid medications, anti-nausea medications, and ear medications. We are fortunate in that many people donate medications to SCF after their pets no longer need them or pass away. We are always in a position to accept properly stored and fully labeled medications. If you are interested in donating please contact us as your support is truly appreciated.

This picture shows 1 week’s worth of medications prepared for all of our residents!

These baby flying squirrels fell to the ground after their nest was blown from a tall Oak tree at the farm. Unfortunately, most of the dogs were out enjoying the sunshine and they thought these tiny, furry critters made fun toys. Thankfully, we also just so happened to be working outside and when we heard their loud squeaks for help … we were actually able to save 2 of the 3 from the frenzy of dogs. One was too badly injured and had to be euthanized right away … but the other two, although scared, bloodied and soaking wet with dog slobber … ended up thriving. We kept them warm and hand fed them for about a week before passing them on to a licensed and experienced wildlife rehabilitation center. They will now get a chance to learn how to glide and will be re-released when old enough. It’s always fun to learn about new critters and this was definitely a first for us! Best of luck little ones! We’re sorry that you had a rough start in life, but we’re glad to have been there when you needed us!

It was too late for their momma, but her two little ones survived the accident and were found sticking close to mom as they didn’t know what else to do. We came to their rescue, hand fed them until they were old enough to start solid food, and while we initially had no intention of them staying longterm, they became far too tame and dependent on us to be re-released. We built them an opossum habitat and they lived a rather luxuries opossum life for numerous years! We learned a lot along the way, such as their unique nutritional requirements and their predisposition to hypocalcemia and metabolic bone disease. We were also very surprised at their clean nature, friendly disposition and relative helplessness to protect themselves. Opossums, unfortunately, get a bad reputation … but we’ve learned so much from Max and Erma and truly have a whole new respect for these creatures. About a year ago, we also, sadly learned about their propensity towards developing congestive heart failure. Max developed symptoms of heart failure quite suddenly and we were unable to save him. He was approximately 2 years old … which we’re told is quite aged for an opossum. Erma continued to thrive until just a few days ago. She had been slowing down and while she still seemed to be in good health, we were keeping a closer watch on her as we knew that she was advancing in age too. Sadly, Erma passed away in her little “house”, curled up as if she passed in her sleep. We hope that’s how she passed anyway. Erma was buried right next to her buddy Max and both will rest permanently here at the farm. We truly are thankful to have been able to spend time with these often misunderstood, “creepy critters of the night”. Turns out they aren’t that “creepy” at all and are infact quite social, clean and friendly (but you can take our word for it). They will be missed and we’re glad to have been able to spoil them both with sardines, dog food, grapes, cold cuts, drumsticks and all of the other tasty morsels that they most certainly wouldn’t have encountered in “the wild”. Rest in peace Max and Erma – you were our first – and perhaps our last opossum residents at the farm.

They don’t have to work, clean up after themselves or “earn their keep” in any sense. However, we do have 2 farm “residents” who work almost as hard as we do in order to keep this place somewhat clean and orderly. You wouldn’t think that these small scale, independent, little robot vacuums would be able to keep up with our messes. The amount of sand and dog hair that accumulates on our floors during the course of a single day, for example, is quite extraordinary. However, thanks to our two Roomba vacuums, our day to day chore list is slightly shorter. Yep, we have two of these nifty little robots and they most certainly earn their keep! They work long hours and often are called upon more than once a day to do a sweep of the entire house. And best of all, they actually work!! Quite well, believe it or not … even with our messes! The dogs aren’t always thrilled when these little “pests” nudge them out of their resting spots in order to clean every square inch of our floors … but we don’t object one bit as it makes waking barefoot a reality in our household Thanks Roomba 1 & 2 for your hard work each and every day! You two definitely earn your keep! This particular shelter took in 49 gerbils yesterday and they are desperate to quickly find safe homes for all of these little ones. If you would consider adopting 1 or 2 little friends, please let me know. We prefer that they not be adopted as a food source for reptiles. Transportation can be arranged and in some cases, cages and basic supplies can be provided.

This handsome boy came to us from a shelter in the Orlando area. Chief found himself in real trouble after his elderly owner was no longer able to care for him. We found out about Chief’s plight and took an immediate interest in his well being. Chief hitched a ride up to Gainesville and was lucky enough to land a spot as a permanent foster dog in a fantastic forever, foster home. While most of our permanent residents reside with us at the farm – a select, lucky few qualify for placement in a permanent foster home! Chief lived a fantastic 4 months with his permanent foster family; which consisted of his human mom, two trusty canine companions and numerous feline friends too! Chief’s foster mom unselfishly opened her home and her heart to this special gentleman and we can’t begin to thank her for her sacrifices and for making such an incredible difference in this special dog’s retirement.

Chief came to us aged (we estimated him to be ~ 12 years old) and he did have some significant age and breed related medical conditions right off the bat. We managed him with diet and medications and Chief continued to be a big, goofy, care-free guy for many months! When he started having significant trouble getting up and getting around and when incontinence became a concern; particularly with his limited mobility … we started talking about what was the best next step for him. After numerous conversations and a lot of thought … we decided that it was important to let Chief pass with dignity and respect; before he became miserable from all of his ailments. Chief likely also had a tumor on his spleen (a ticking time bomb – literally!) and had started to develop some pressure sores from being unable to get up at times. He had neurological deficits in both rear legs and required daily steroids to keep him somewhat mobile. Even though Chief didn’t seem to grasp the severity of his situation (he continued to be a goof!) we knew that times would only get worse for him and we made the difficult decision to help him pass before all of his concerns truly caught up with him. Chief was able to be at home when he passed and we prepared him a HUGE breakfast / brunch with all sorts of goodies! He had cheese, sausage, peanut butter, bagels, turkey & stuffing, and a variety of other tasty tidbits (all while his fellow dog and cat friends looked on with wonder!). We then helped Chief to lay down and while his already stuffed belly got even more full from a scrumptious bowl of canned food … Chief slowly became drowsy and drifted off to sleep … all while his “mom” talked to him and reassured him that everyone was fine.

Chief had a fantastic retirement and we owe it all to his devoted foster mom! Perhaps equally as important, Chief passed with dignity and respect and knew without a doubt that he was loved and that he had a family of his own. We extend our most sincere appreciation to Casey, for opening up her heart to this special dog who needed a second chance. The “baggage” that comes along with being a permanent foster mom is heavy at times … but her selflessness and willingness to put her heart on the line was so very impressive. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Our sympathies are with you as Chief will most certainly be missed in your home.

Chief now rests permanently here at the farm; alongside some of our other noble shepherds who have passed on before him. Rest in peace handsome man! We’re so glad that you had a wonderful retirement!

Got a late start this AM and just now finished feeding the outdoor critters. It’s is chilly out there … first real cold weather for the season. It’s gonna take a little getting used to as our daily routines change a bit when the cooler temps come. The dogs, in particular, will need to catch on to some new arrangements as we move critters around in order to keep everyone comfy & cozy. Everyone’s living space (including ours!) gets a bit more crowded as we make room indoors for more critters. This morning’s cool temps remind us of our great need for animal bedding. We need blankets, comforters, towels, pillows, cushions, sheets, etc, etc. Anything that can be used for snuggling is fair game! We do have some animals who stay outdoors year round and we need to warm things for them to cuddle into. Bedding donations can be delivered to Suburban Animal Hospital on Newberry Rd … or if you’re unable to deliver your donation, let us know as we can coordinate for pick up in some situations. Thanks so much for your support and enjoy this beautiful, Fall weather!
