These two companions came to us after they were picked up together as strays. Both dogs were 12+ years of age and although we suspected they had an owner out there somewhere … no one ever came forward to claim them. So we took them into our program and they became permanent residents here at the farm. Perhaps not surprisingly, both dogs came to us infected with heartworms and Fitch, in particular, was very thin and in poor body condition. We suspected that Fitch probably had some significant, age related, underlying health concerns in addition to his heartworm infection. But he was in good spirits and seemed appreciative to be able to stay with Greta and to get a second chance at retirement here at SCF. Sadly, a few months after coming to SCF, Fitch became very ill and we had to make the difficult decision to put him to sleep. His faithful, lifelong companion, Greta stayed by his side until the very end. Fitch passed away quickly and peacefully and he knew that Greta was there with him. Fitch will now rest forever here at SCF … and when Greta’s time comes to pass over the rainbow bridge … we have no doubt that these two old friends will be reunited. Greta had a little trouble adjusting to life without Fitch. But with time and patience, she has incorporated herself into a new group of friends and seems content once again to enjoy her retirement here at the farm. Fitch is pictured here and Greta can be seen behind him. Fitch, even in his poor health, was such a handsome boy with a big, regal head and gorgeous markings! We will all miss you Fitch … and Greta will see you again someday. Rest in peace handsome boy!
Greta is pictured here enjoying the outdoors. She’s a pretty dog and has many of the “typical” GSD traits. She is very loyal and dedicated to her family and is very attentive to everything that happens around her. She’s a very intelligent and intuitive girl.

Sadly, just a few short months after Fitch passed away … Greta also passed over the rainbow bridge. She had made new friends here at the farm and we made a point to give her a little extra attention every day … as we knew that she missed her lifelong companion. She was never ill and never acted sick … she simply went to sleep one night and never woke up. We hope that she was dreaming of Fitch when she passed away and we have no doubt that she was welcomed with lots of sloppy kisses from Fitch when she crossed over the rainbow bridge. We didn’t expect to lose Greta so shortly after Fitch had passed … but these two were clearly meant to stay together and we’re thankful to have been able to provide them with a safe and comfortable retirement. Rest in peace sweet Greta! You will never again have to be apart from your faithful and loyal companion. Greta will forever rest here at SCF … right next to Fitch.
